If at least a year has elapsed between the date of an accused being committed and the date fixed for trial, no adjournment should be granted. In announcing this yesterday during a special sitting to mark the Commencement of the Legal Year 2010-2011, Acting Chief Justice, Sherman Moore, noted that to reduce the delay and break the backlog of 300 criminal cases, he had instructed judges not to grant any adjournments.

And last Friday night's robbery and arson in Tudor Street, Bridgetown, that killed six young women has been described by BCCI president Anthony Armstrong as a wake-up call.
